Post-Operative Care Instructions
Follow these guidelines to ensure a quick recovery following your dental procedure:
After Surgery
Do not touch the surgical site or suckle on it with your fingers. For 45 minutes, bite firmly onto the gauze and swallow saliva. Remove the gauze after 45 minutes. Saliva will be stained with blood for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid spitting as this may cause bleeding.
Pain Relief
Take 2 Tylenol tablets or Advil before the local anesthetic has worn off. You can take one or more tablets as needed every 4 to 6 hours. Take your medication on an empty stomach.
Swelling
To reduce swelling, apply ice packs for 30 minutes and then 30 minutes of rest during the first 24 to 48 hours. After this time, use warm compresses.
Bleeding
Expect some bleeding. If bleeding is excessive, apply pressure to the area for 40-60 mins. Please contact our office if the bleeding continues.
Diet
Avoid using a straw for the first 24 hours. After that, you may switch to soft food.
Oral Hygiene
For the first four days, do not rinse the surgical site. Brush your other teeth while avoiding the surgical area.
